  • Teddy Blue Abbott Monument

    Kay Bedford|Oct 16, 2019

The long awaited arrival of the statue of Teddy Blue Abbott, mounted on his horse while pushing cattle across the Musselshell River in the late eighteen hundreds, was unveiled in Roundup recently by the artist, Greg Eiselein. A good-sized gathering of local residents were more than impressed with the statue which is about 34 feet long and 12 feet high. Although currently covered with blue (how appropriate!) styrofoam, it will eventually be cast in bronze. This has been a work in progress for...

  • Pastor's Corner

    Oct 16, 2019

Tueday it was 74 degrees outside and a sin against God to remain in the house. While out walking in the woods and hills, I came upon 2 very large boulders, each about 4.5’ high and about 2’ across. Out from the top of the boulders grew one pine tree in each boulder. One boulder was split lengthwise down the middle from the growth of the tree. The other tree was in the hole it had made to grow out of. The trees were probably 10 – 15’ tall so they had been there quite a while. As I began reflecting on this amazing sight (I have photos!} I thoug...

  • Elk hunters be engaged, be heard

    Tom Puchlerz|Oct 16, 2019

I watched and listened in awe during my first year of hunting elk as a large bull screamed, nose flared, while he herded his cows from his bugling challenger. That was in 1979 and a lot has changed over the past 40 years. Today elk are plentiful in places where they were absent back then and on some forested public lands they are no longer as common. Predator populations are doing well, major fires are common place as our climate changes and hunting technology continues to advance. Landowner acceptance of elk has also changed, varying widely...

  • Impeaching a President, High School Civics for Politicians

    Harold Pease PhD|Oct 16, 2019

Constitutional instructions for impeaching a president of the United States are very specific. Actually, reading the Constitution should easily put to rest the proposed impeachment of President Donald J. Trump. His enemies obviously have not done so. Impeachment means tried by the U.S. Senate for "treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors," whether found guilty and removed or acquitted and remain in office. It begins in the House of Representatives who formulate the alleged charges then passes to the Senate for trial. In the case...

  • Montana's Petroleum Industry Supports Stewardship and the Outdoor Economy

    Oct 16, 2019

In a rush to judgment, some conservation groups place blame for every conceivable environmental malady on the development of Montana’s natural resources, because, well, fear sells. Fear sells newspapers and organizational memberships. Fear sells political agendas and is used to pit different segments of society against each other using nothing more than misleading information or, more often than not, totally false statements. A recent op-ed penned by a board member and former president of the Montana Wildlife Federation laments that the idea of...

  • Put Fall Leaves to Work in Your Landscape

    Melinda Myers|Oct 16, 2019

Raking fall leaves can seem like a chore and a never-ending one, at that. Reduce time and effort spent managing fall leaves by putting this valuable resource to work in your landscape. Use your mower to recycle leaves right where they fall. As you mow the grass, you’ll shred the leaves into smaller pieces. If they are the size of a quarter or smaller, your lawn will be fine. As these leaf pieces decompose, they add organic matter and nutrients to the soil. Another option is to attach a bagger to shred and collect the leaves with every pass o...

The comment heard over and over again was, “I had no idea the size of this sculpture.” A number of people, including several high school students, availed themselves of Greg’s invitation to actively participate in the sculpture’s creation by applying some clay. • DELPHIA

    Larry and Jane Stanfel|Oct 16, 2019

In 1908 the Milwaukee, St. Paul, and Pacific Railroad laid track and began service to Roundup and beyond. About 17 miles east of Roundup the company bridged the Musselshell River and contracted with the Globe Elevator Company of Lewistown to construct an elevator for neighboring ranchers to store their grain for shipment on the line. Thus, started Delphia, so that steam engines could have water and load up with grain, and one wonders if passengers may have worried about going back East when...

    Jennifer Harper|Oct 16, 2019

There are some public officials, cities and states which prefer not to recognize Columbus Day on Monday, opting instead to mark Indigenous Peoples Day, also known as Native Americans Day. At least eight states, 10 universities and more than 130 cities across 34 states now observe Indigenous Peoples Day as an alternative to the federally recognized Columbus Day, which they say glorifies the mistreatment and colonization of Native Americans, according to USA Today. President Trump, however, instead has issued a formal proclamation recognizing Col...
