Life

We have just remembered the anniversary of a Supreme Court ruling from January 22, 1973. It is more commonly known as Roe vs. Wade. It effectively made the aborting, or as we pro-lifers say, the murder of infants inside the womb of a woman legal. In 2020 the number of abortions globally, 42.6 million, became the leading cause of death in the world. I'm not writing to debate numbers; I only use this number to represent the pandemic of death among babies that many in our world accept as being good. Arguing and debating will probably get us nowhere, yet the subject needs to be addressed. Just because there was a wrong ruling by the Court in 1973 doesn't mean that it should stand unchallenged forever.

For a long time, the principal question that needed to be addressed by me was the question, "When does life begin?" A lot of science says that it starts at conception, and I could argue that point. But it is not the question that I now think is most important. I now believe that the most crucial question is, "Does God exist and does He reveal who He is in a book called the Bible, and does it seem logical that we should submit to Him?" I know that there are really three questions, but it is necessary to put them together for me. If there is a God, then who is He. Another debatable question. But if He is described and explained somewhere, we can agree on many things and find out many truths about Him. A big truth is that He is the creator. Anything and everything was created by Him. How do I know I can believe this? First, you should read about it and see what it says, but ultimately it is something you believe by faith. This is important because it’s necessary to believe that God is real and the Bible is the source that tells us about Him.

Now, back to the point, if God is the creator and created life, I should not step in and remove that life. If that baby in the womb is a living human being with a soul and a spirit, then to destroy that life is the sin of murder and breaks the 6th Commandment of God. God is the giver and taker of life, not me. A couple of good places to look at the creative process in the womb are Psalm 139:13-16 and Jeremiah 1:5.

So I go back to that most essential question, "Is God real?' If He is, we need to submit to Him and process life through this truth. That includes the truth of life, where it comes from, and when it begins.
