Roundup Rodeo News

Every year on the 3rd and 4th of July, one of Roundups main attractions is the Rodeo. This past year, the Roundup Rodeo was one of the best attractions around. It was so good that this year that Roundup Rodeo was chosen by WPRA (Women's Professional Rodeo Association) for the "Justin Boots Best Footing" award, meaning the rodeo has the safest, most consistent ground conditions, (great dirt). Along with the award plaque, there was included a certificate for a pair of Justin boots, and eight hundred dollars in prize money.

This is the third year that Roundup is qualified as a PRCA Rodeo. This means we are now officially a PRO rodeo in Roundup, which is no small thing. Being a pro Rodeo is costly, but a big plus for Roundup's dot on the map. Pro riders will be here every year, and this draws not only rodeo folk, but fans from all around. According to Stew Sanner, many people who come for the rodeo here love it so much that they can't wait to come back every year. They love the rodeo grounds and atmosphere.

Every Year Signal Peak sponsors the Rodeo, and Roundup Rodeo would not be the success it is today without the financial contribution that Signal Peak gives each year. Many people and businesses contribute as well. There is a large amount of sweat equity given by the Roundup Rodeo Club to maintain and keep up the facility and grounds. Along with the club and other community contributions, the FFA students come and help during the rodeo and help.

Stew Sanner and Angie Tatman, with whom I interviewed, are only a few of the local people involved in the Roundup Rodeo. Raymond (Rainbow)Hillman, Kim Erickson, and Ryan Stahl are also on the committee that help, along with others who quietly do so much in the background without recognition.

From the time he was six, Stew went to rodeos with his uncle Rainbow,(Raymond Hillman), he participated through high school and also did some bull fighting as a clown. His involvement with rodeo is lifelong. Angie was originally from Iowa, when she married Tat, she moved to Roundup and became involved with rodeo and has been involved every since. Once rodeo is in your blood it is a bit like the lyrics of the Garth Brooks song:

It's dust and mud

It's the roar of a Sunday crowd

It's the white in his knuckles

Stew Sanner

The gold in the buckle

He'll win the next go 'round

It's boots and chaps

It's cowboy hats

It's spurs and latigo

It's the ropes and the reins

And the joy and the pain

And they call the thing RODEO.

The Roundup Rodeo is a non-profit. When profit is made, it is donated to help with the FFA students, Toys 4 Tots, and the local hospital. Just another way that our outstanding community takes care of its own, the Rodeo gives back to the community.

This year may be the busiest rodeo yet. People will be able to pre purchase tickets and also purchase the day of. Be sure you save the date this July 3rd and 4th for Roundup's PRO RODEO.
