Hazel Hogan Alger Moore, 100Hazel Hogan Alger Moore was born south of Musselshell, MT, October 19, 1919, to Ruby (King) and George R. Hogan. The family moved to Lavina, MT, in 1924. Hazel, the fifth child, and her four sisters and one brother all attended school in Lavina until her senior year when they moved to Stanford, MT. After graduating from Stanford in 1937, Hazel attended nursing school at the Great Falls Columbus Hospital. She graduated from nursing school with an RN (registered nurse) on December 6, 1941, the day before Pearl Harbor was attacked.Hazel then joined the Army Nurse Corps and was trained and stationed at various bases across the United States, including Atlantic City, New Jersey. Her overseas wartime service was with the 34th General Hospital near Winchester, in Stockbridge, England. Hazel had many memorable stories about her World War II service.After the war, Hazel took a nursing job at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Billings. Going back to Stanford on March 16, 1946 to visit her family, she met the brother of a fellow she had known in school. She and Bert Alger dated for only three months before tying the knot on June 16, 1947. Hazel and Bert lived and raised their family of four children on a dry land farm north of Stanford. While Bert ran the farm, Hazel helped as any farm wife does, but she also utilized her nursing skills. She worked for a time at St. Leo’s Hospital in Lewistown, and then from 1969-1987 was the school nurse for the Stanford, Geyser, Raynesford, Utica, Hobson, and the Surprise Creek Hutterite Colony schools. Bert passed away January 13, 1990.Hazel had been a member of the Order of Eastern Star in the Stanford, Hobson, and Roundup communities. It was through this connection that she met and then married Charles Moore on December 28, 1998. Hazel and Charley lived on a farm near Roundup for 16 years. Hazel was immediately adopted into the Moore family. She loved them all. In April, 2015, Hazel and Charley moved to Heartland Assisted Living near Joliet. Charley passed away June 1, 2015. Hazel continued to live there until 2017 when she moved to Tendernest Assisted Living in Billings. Her family appreciates the love and care she received from Tendernest and Compassus.Hazel was predeceased by her parents, Ruby and George, by four of her siblings, Georgia Sykes, Eleanor Schwend, Verna Knesal, and Ernest Hogan, and husbands, Bert Alger and Charley Moore. She is survived by her sister Madge Dismore, her children, Jess and Gayle Alger (Stanford), Patricia and Rick Bischoff (Joliet), Diane and Dave Engel (Joliet) and Dale and Tomi Alger (Roundup), as well as by nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by two stepsons, Orville and Tonie Moore (Powell, WY) and Bill and Trina Moore (Roundup), along with numerous step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren.Hazel passed away Saturday, December 14, 2019. Memorial services will be held at the Stanford Presbyterian Church, 209 2nd St. S, in Stanford, MT on Wednesday, December 18, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow in the Stanford Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Presbyterian Church, Stanford, MT 59479; the Roundup United Methodist Church, Box 84, Roundup, MT 59072; or the Roundup Community Library, 525 6th Ave. West, Roundup, MT 59072.
