Did you never read a passage of text that had some pleasant words in it and, then, as your eyes dropped to the next line, said to yourself, “Wait a minute! What did I just read?” or “That doesn’t really have any meaning,” or “Say, I disagree with that.”? I just experienced that sort of pause in perusing Ms. Mozqueda’s column in the Christmas Day number of this newspaper, in which she counseled readers to “embrace our differences, and to recognize the beauty of diversity.”

“The beauty of diversity” puzzles me, as would phrases like “the nobility of chiaroscuro” or “the grandeur of longevity.” W...
