Upcoming Fundraiser to Boost "Purse" for the 4th of July Rodeo

Written by Adair Rademacher

A group of individuals gathered in 2011 (or so) to discuss resurrecting the 4th of July Rodeo in Roundup. The group of locals now call themselves Rodeo Roundup and in the beginning they focused on a small town/low-key event, but their rodeo dream was bigger, a PRCA (Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association) rodeo. Rodeo Roundup has presented a PRCA sanctioned rodeo the last 4 years. They not only brought the 4th of July Rodeo back to life but have improved the rodeo every year.

Rodeo Roundup work hard to gather a generous "purse" for the yearly rodeo. A "purse" is money paid to the winners of the various events in the rodeo. The "purse" is comprised of money put up by the individual rodeo committees. A PRCA cowboy's standings are based on the total amount of money they earn per year. The cowboys with the most winning, gathered from each separate rodeo, at the end of the year qualify them to compete at the National Finals Rodeo. Therefore a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place at a rodeo totals more money earned, and the more rodeos attended collect more money. Cowboys will sometimes target rodeos that have a larger "purse." Cowboys do not get paid to compete; they only receive money when they place in an event. A generous sized "purse" has a three-fold effect: it brings in contestants, and if a cowboy is lucky enough to place in an event (or two) it raises their standing within the PRCA, and lastly, it brings in spectators.

That being said, there will be a Rodeo Roundup Fundraiser May 7th at the Arcade Bar to increase the amount of money the committee can contribute to the "purse" during the upcoming 2022 rodeo. Come join the party! Festivities begin at 2 pm. The fundraising event will include a live and silent auction, live music featuring Sabra Mack. There will be a Kentucky Derby Hat competition, with a prize being given for the best hat. A dinner consisting of a grilled hamburger, coleslaw, beans, and dessert will be served during the event for $13.00.

Everyone loves a rodeo and especially the town of Roundup and the surrounding area. To enhance the atmosphere, the Arcade will be serving Kentucky Derby style mint juleps. Come out and support Rodeo Roundup and watch the Kentucky Derby race. All proceeds will be directed to the "purse."
