Forest Lake

If you are looking for a remote get-away in the Mountains, consider Forest Lake. South of Lennep off of Highway 294, Forest Lake is on an eleven mile Forest Service Road through the mountains. The eleven miles is a very narrow, rough and rocky road that takes around an hour to drive. When you reach Forest Lake, the campground will be up the mountain to the right of the main road, and the lake is a steep hiking trail down from the main road where the campground road intersects. If you are physically suffering in any way, this trail might be too difficult for you. However, it is not a long hike, just steep. If you have the ability to take walking sticks, this will help tremendously, and I strongly recommend them for the less nimble hikers.

The lake is stunningly crystal clear with small fish. A respite from the valley heat, and a fairly remote location, this is a great attraction for camping or even a day trip. It is about a three hour drive from Roundup. For all the geo cache rock hunters, there are even Facebook rocks at Forest Lake.

Lastly, as a small warning, the road can be a challenge, and may not be for the faint of heart. It would be best not to take a pull camper, or travel this road during inclement weather.
