Charlie Morgan Schenk

Charlie was born on July 12, 1927, and passed to his rest on the evening of August 2, 2021. He was the oldest of five children of Max and Zella (Kohlmyer) Schenk. Born on a homestead west of Colstrip, MT, he attended first grade at Trail Creek Country School. All of the students rode to school on horseback. As a six-year-old, he rode with his father, Max.The following year the family moved twelve miles south of Forsyth, MT so the children could walk to Armell's Creek School. When Charlie was attending sixth grade, his father bought a ranch 10 miles south of Forsyth where he attended Smith Creek School. There he had a three-mile walk, "Uphill both ways", he always said. Charlie graduated from Forsyth High School in 1946.

July 1946, Charlie was drafted into the Army at the request of Franklin D. Roosevelt. He completed basic training at Ft. Bragg, NC, where he was deployed to South Korea as a ham radio operator. As a member of the 32nd Infantry, he was stationed 5 miles from North Korea on the 38th parallel. In the summer of 1947, as a draftee, he was allowed to return home after receiving an honorable discharge.

Charlie settled in Forsyth and bought a truck and hauled wheat for Ashenhurst Farm & Ranch. After working on several farms and ranches in the area, he rented a farm for five years. He then moved to Billings and worked for Reinke Brothers Construction while farming for R. T. Morrow.

Charlie was baptized into the Seventh-day Adventist Church in 1956 where he met Vieth Poole. She was a Registered Nurse and a Nurse Anesthetist. They were married in 1958 until her death from cancer. They bought the Rehder Ranch, twelve miles south of Roundup, in 1960. In 1964, they started Bull Mountain Angus and purchased 1,000 acres of farmland near Lavina, MT. Charlie and Vieth also followed the wheat harvest for fifteen years, traveling with their crew from Oklahoma to Montana. In the winter, Charlie hauled hay and cattle for neighbors in the area. He later sold the Lavina farm and bought land closer to the ranch.

Charlie married Verla Ann Beltz from Lincoln, NE and they lived on the ranch for five years until he retired in 2001. He sold his ranch to Frosty Creek Angus and High Butte Angus.

It was Charlie's suggestion that they move to Lincoln, NE where Verla's children and grandchildren lived. He was greatly loved as "papa", a title he enjoyed very much. They bought an acreage near Hickman, NE where Charlie bought and later sold 200 acres in the Sterling, NE area. In 2001, they bought a home in Lincoln where he lived until his death.

Charlie is survived by his wife of twenty-four years, Verla Ann Schenk, his brother Gale Schenk (Billings), brother and sister-in-law, Mike and Ann Schenk (Roundup), ten nieces and nephews, three stepdaughters, and four step-grandchildren. His sisters, Iris Haines and Mary Holbrook preceded him in death, along with one stepdaughter, Lisa Beltz.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, August 8, 2021 at Capital View Seventh-day Adventist Church in Lincoln with burial in the College View Cemetery.

Memorials received will be given to: Maranatha Volunteers International, 990 Reserve Dr., Ste. 100, Roseville, CA 95678 Maranatha.org

Charlie believed in the transforming power of grace through faith in Jesus Christ, and that he will sleep in the grave until Jesus returns.

"Even so, Come, Lord Jesus!" Rev 22:20
