WINNETT SENIOR NEWS

May 6 - There were twenty-eight seniors and ten take-out meals today. Our lunch was pasta sausage bake, Caesar salad, beets, relishes, and ice cream sundaes with toppings for dessert.

The foot clinic will be on May 10. Be sure to let Linda G. know if you want an appointment or not. They usually fill up fast, so be sure to let Linda know.

Cassie thanked the seniors for their Easter Egg hunt donation. They filled over 500 plastic Easter eggs with candy, money, and surprises. There was a great turnout of kids to enjoy the hunt. We also thank Cassie for organizing this and putting it together. The town clean up was on May 1. Thank you to all who came out to help.

Gary G. won the 50/50 for $9.00. Congratulations Gary! Luann mentioned that another food truck for the farm to table program will be available on May 10. She wanted to know if there was anyone available to go to Lewistown to pick up the boxes. Diane I. mentioned they would be willing to do that. Ginger brought in rhubarb for anyone to pick up and take home. Thank you, Ginger.

The Lions Club will be working on Grand Ave in Winnett on May 22. They will be starting at 10:00. The cemetery clean-up will be on Saturday May 15 starting at 10:00. Anyone is welcome to come help. Bring weed eaters, lawn mowers, rakes, whatever you have available, and we’ll get the cemetery looking nice and ready for Memorial Day.

The school music concert will be Thursday, May 13. This is the last concert of the year right before graduation. Gary, while working in his office, came across a 1924 Winnett School annual. It was interesting to go through and see what was happening and who was making it happen in 1924. Play day with Grass Range, Roy, and Winnett will be in Winnett this year. It is for kids ages 4 years old, to 6th grade. Hope to see you there.

May 13 - Ham sandwiches, tomato soup with crackers, fresh veggie tray, and strawberry shortcake was enjoyed by twenty-eight seniors and nine take-out meals.

Donna L. read a letter from the governor stating the Petroleum County Community Center had received a community development block grant for $450,000 for construction of a new senior center. Linda read a few headlines from a senior citizen scrapbook form 1981-1984. One of the headlines mentioned that the high school choir sang for the seniors in 1981. Our cook Patti was a member of the choir that year. There were several articles mention fun things the seniors did for each other and the community in July 1984. Four new rocking chairs were delivered. Lillian and Tilly Bond went and picked them up.

The 50/50 for $10 was won by Linda G. Delli gave a report on Gunda Lewis. She spent her birthday in the hospital. Delli also mentioned she had visited with Shirley Hughes. She has cancer in her eye. She starts chemo in June. She will be at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona. They are in AZ now and will come home for their grandson Jeffrey’s wedding. They will then return to AZ and hope to come back to MT in September for a couple of months.

We are glad to have Joan M. with us today. She told a few stories of her and Brendon. He was a cattle rancher; she was a sheepman’s daughter. In those days, sheepmen and cattlemen were at odds. They were teaching school in Plevna and she was fixing leg of lamb. Brendon heard “ham”, so it was okay to eat. She never let on that it was not really ham,

Rosie Zimmerman told a story about her brother-in-law marrying his girlfriend of 20 years in a surprise wedding in Lewistown.

Patti told about the auction at the Teigen Ranch. The Teigan Ranch is no longer, but the new owners will continue to be in ranching, and it will continue to be called the Teigan Ranch.

Linda reminded everyone of the cemetery clean-up on Saturday at 1:00.

Baccalaureate will be at the Baptist Church on Sunday, May 16 at 10:00. Graduation will be at the school gym starting at 1:00. Congratulations to our seniors and we wish them the best as they leave high school behind and move forward to new adventures.

May 20 - Twenty-four seniors and nine take-out orders enjoyed a lunch of meatloaf, baked potatoes, corn, and chocolate pudding cake.

Gary told an “Ole” joke. He mentioned he still has some concerns about the seniors moving over the community center. He wants a written contract and given the community center board about what the seniors would like to have in their center there. He feels some of the committee members do not want to acknowledge the seniors and what they would like to have in their center. For example: they would like to take their own chairs, utensils, and dishes that the seniors already own.

Carol Ann mentioned the “naming of the rooms”. Room 1 will be named the Wesley Carroll Room – home of the Petroleum County Senior Center. She wanted to know of that would work and was ok with the seniors. We need to have a board meeting with the PCCC board members and the senior board members to iron out some questions and concerns. One thing they want to do is pay to PCCC only to cover expenses like utilities, electricity for just the senior center.

Lions Club postponed working on Grand Ave due to weather. Donna L. mentioned Kelly Krutzfeld’s (soon to be Kelly Lund) bridal shower on Saturday the 22nd. Ginger said they had a great turnout for cleaning up the cemetery. Thank you to all who came out and worked. Delli brought some Lewistown News Argus papers to seniors. It was the paper that had a nice article and pictures of the Flatwillow Homemakers.

Ralph gave a report on Gunda Lewis. She is moving to South Dakota to live with her daughter Sara Brindley. Gunda finally agreed she couldn’t live on her own anymore. We will miss her! Rosie Z. is headed back to Minnesota next week. This is her last day at seniors until October. She will miss the wonderful people and delicious food. See you in October. Babs will do birthday cakes for May. Mary won the 50/50 for $8.

May 27 - Twenty-seven seniors and nine take-out orders celebrated our birthdays this month. We had oven fried chicken, mashed potatoes with milk gravy, green salad, cranberries, with birthday cake and ice cream.

Kim and Leo T. were able to join us today. It was great seeing them. Luann asked for people to send in photos of any event they might have that was held at Flatwillow hall. Flatwillow Hall is celebrating 100 years on July 2 and Luann would like to do a collage of pictures of anything that went on in the Hall. The Lions’ Club is putting together a directory of area residents with their mailing address. The post office will no longer deliver mail with incomplete addresses.

Gunda left for Sara’s in So. Dakota on Monday. Donna Rowton celebrated her birthday in May. Ginger won the 50/50 for $13.50. Shari Gardner’s memorial service will be June 7 in the school gym. Luanne Woodford’s memorial service will be June 11 at the Baptist Church, and Bonny Allen’s memorial service will be June 12 at her residence.

This has been a busy month for everyone. There are so may things going or things we are preparing for from funerals, weddings, new babies, graduation, vacations, and everything in between. Hope everyone had a happy and healthy May. See you in June.
