Walter Phillip Atkinson

Walter Phillip Atkinson, age 74, passed away peacefully on June 3, 2020 at home with his wife Pauline and dog by his side after a lengthy battle with cancer. Walt was born on February 7, 1946 and grew up in Hunterdon County, NJ with the loving guidance of his parents Harold and Eleanor Atkinson.

As a child and young man, Walter enjoyed playing sports, hunting, trapping and riding his motorcycle. He was a varsity football and baseball player, and wrestler at Hunterdon Central High School. Walt went on to play sports at Kemper Military School and College in Booneville, Missouri, graduating in 1967. An avid fly fisherman, archer and marksmen he proudly shared his talents with his wife Pauline while exploring the West. His grandchildren are grateful to have participated in these adventures. Walter's daughters have fond memories watching him artistically tie fly's and helping to hang deer stands. Walt and his son Christopher enjoyed their precious time together hunting and fishing as often as they could.

Walter was a Vietnam veteran who served the United States Army's 173rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team as a "sky soldier". He was an expert marksman and sharpshooter. He served as a forward observer in Vietnam until being seriously wounded in combat, ultimately losing his left leg. He received a Purple Heart for his sacrifice, the National Defense Service, Vietnam Service, Army Commendation, Vietnam Campaign and Vietnam Gallantry Cross medals. Walter was honorably discharged in 1970. He felt kindred with the lands of Montana where he and Pauline have lived for over 20 years.

He will be missed by all.

Walt is survived by his wife Pauline Atkinson, his daughters from his first marriage; Heather Atkinson and Lauren Atkinson, Rachel Atkinson and Tracy Renfer from his second marriage, sons Christopher Seeley, Jeremy Kafarski and grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, his daughter Sara Atkinson from his first marriage and a grandson.
