Dave Schrumph's father, Don, opened Dons Welding, in 1980. He built his shop off of Horse Thief Road in 1984 after the huge fire of 1984 when the family home in the Bull Mountains was burned to the ground. Dave had just started his freshman year of high school, had left in the morning and he and his sisters never returned home, and the family then moved to Roundup.

Originally from Red Lodge, Dave's family moved to the Roundup Bull Mountain area in 1978 when Dave was in 3rd grade. Dave learned the welding trade from his father at a young age. They put in an exhaust shop in 1985 to repair exhaust systems, and business grew.

When going to meet with Dave Schrumpf, currently the owner and operator of Dons Welding, I noticed the beautiful metalwork sign going up the hill to the shop. Dave has been operating the shop since his father passed away four years ago, and is continuing the business while branching into other areas that involve custom projects.

Dave can make just about anything from metal, he makes a kit to stop the back door on newer Ford club cabs from hitting the flat bed when they open. He has built custom gate entrances, large metal signs, he builds for many agriculture and oilfield projects, decorative and repair fabrication, artistic light fixture chandeliers, weather veins, just about anything you can think of with metal, Dave can make. He has built the hand rail at the Masonic Hall, and the railing at the Church of Christ, just to name a few that you could see any day of the week.

Dave is also a community pillar. He has taught Hunter's Safety for several years not only here in Roundup, but also in Yellowstone County. He sponsors a work study student from the high school, helping a student learn new work skills, and gain working experience for future resume. The name Don's Welding is a little confusing for some people now that his father is gone, and Dave has renamed the business to Schrumpf Enterprises, but wants everyone to understand it is the same business, and the sign still says Don's Welding on the building.

With such a vast ability for versatility in his work, Dave will have continued success. One more business that shows how Roundup is more than meets the eye. Our community has so much to offer that after a year and a half of writing about our local businesses I feel I have only scratched the surface.
