Butcher shop

A local business that is bustling right now is Daum's Meat House. Though they are NOT a commercial retail meat shop, they work full time cutting for their customers. Ty and Tori Daum, along with Ty's mother Marilyn are working every day in their spotless butcher shop cutting up to four beef a week.

Originally from the Lavina/Rygate area, the Daum's are longtime local ranchers and meat cutters in the community. Ty's parents, Ron and Marilyn ranched near Lavina and Ty grew up in the meat cutting business with his family. Ron Daum had a meat house since 1978. Ty went into business for himself in 2004, he bought out Dan's Custom Cuts in Lavina. He eventually sold that business, which was mostly game processing, and started butchering domestics in 2007. In 2019 Ty and his wife Tori moved to Roundup and built Daum's Meat House. They were licensed in April 2020 and booked full before May. They are currently booked out till March of 2022. They are so busy that they keep a list of people that get called if someone cancels.

Daum's have many loyal customers from their previous business and picked up customers from Project Meats, from Shepherd/ Huntley, when they closed. Project Meats bought the meat plant in Miles City, and asked Ty to take his loyal customers about a week after Ty got the licensed as Daum's Meat House. That booked them out until September of their first year.

The Meat House is currently butchering sheep, hogs and cattle, but Tori says they are looking to faze out of sheep and hogs in the near future and just stick to cattle. Tori stressed to me that they DO NOT SELL RETAIL, this is NOT an operation for people looking to buy cuts of meat. This is a butcher for suppliers only. They are licensed only for custom cuts, bought from local supplier and then brought in.

The longtime family business is professional, sterile, and organized. Home businesses can be hard to get time away from and this is something so many farmers and ranchers understand. This is true for the Daum's, as the business grows, personal time gets shortened. Hopefully the hardworking family will have some downtime for fishing and vacation, along with continued success. The success of each small business is a success for our community.
