Bar Star Cattle

Chad & Stephanie Murnin

February 3, 2021

Bar Star Cattle, is a registered Hereford Ranch owned and operated by Chad and Stephanie Murnin. The couple have been raising registered and commercial Hereford cattle since 2006, with their first cow that they purchased together when they were engaged. Stephanie was raised on a registered cattle operation, and her husband was raised on a commercial cattle operation. Through hard work and grit, they have built the business from the ground up. They lease two ranches near Musselshell, and travel every year to the National Western Stock Show in January, to show their stock. Stephanie says that they aren't raising "show" bulls, but go to shows to get attention for their stock with breeders. This year because of Covid-19 the National Western Stock Show was cancelled so they went to the Cattleman's Congress on short notice. This was a fortunate event for Murnin's and they sold ten bulls.

This year the Murnin's set an all-time record for the sale of their registered bull at the Cattleman's Congress Hereford Show, selling Bar Star Fresh Prince 018, (that is his full name) for "Just north of one hundred thousand dollars", Stephanie explained. That was the highest selling bull by double. "That is not normal for the average Joe", says Stephanie. Some of these photos were featured in the January 13th issue of the Roundup Record and Winnett Tribune. The Murnin's were astonished at this price, and could never have imagined the success.

Since coming home they have had a huge uptick in business and calls. Stephanie explains what a joy this has been because they are not rich ranchers, they have debt to pay and have nothing from inheritance. The couple have been working diligently for the accomplished registered breed, building up the heard to be max performance stock, making the name for themselves, and attending the annual shows. Running a registered heard is costly and requires full commitment to detail. It isn't just feeding and breading, it is the registrations, the vaccinations, the special feed, mortgages, leases and much more.

The Murnin's have been in this area only two years. They had moved here with their children, from Loma Montana. The move here was an expansion. They generally sell about 40 bulls a year but with the growth it might be more like 60-75 in the next year.
