My Interview With Santa Clause
December 23, 2020
I was dashing through the snow for my high noon appointment to interview Santa Clause, when I spotted the one-horse open sleigh in the stable to my right. It was a bit dark at the North Pole, even at noon, but that was ok because Santa had a beacon, Rudolph the Red nosed reindeer. Santa told me that if I got lost to look for the beacon and sure enough, lighting up the stable was Rudolph’s red nose.
Rudolph, Dancer, Prancer, Vixon, and Garmen in the stable playing hot hay, it’s a reindeer game like hot potato. Garmen was the newest addition to the reindeer team. He had a way of finding every address, and Santa just HAD to have him. Dancer and Prancer kept twirling as they tossed, the hot hay. I looked out in the corral and there was Comet, Cupid, Donner, and Blitzen playing hockey. The elves were watching on cheering for team green or team red. It was hard to follow, and I didn’t want to get caught up in the sports fighting, I was here to see Santa.
I looked past the farm yard and there stood the most magical house I had ever seen. Colored lights were everywhere. The door burst open and Mrs. Clause welcomed me into the warmest, most colorful home I had ever entered. She said, “He is waiting by the fire to answer all of your questions dear”, and then she handed me a cup of hot cocoa with marshmallows on top.
The kindly Santa beckoned me to sit in a big cozy chair by the fireplace. “Ho, ho, ho” he said, “What paper did you say you were from?”
“The Roundup Record Tribune and Winnett Times” I replied.
“Oh my yes, I know the good boys and girls in that area” he explained.
That brought me to my first question. I asked Santa how he keeps track of everyone who is good, he explained that It was simple. How could that be simple I wondered. Without having asked the question he seemed to know what I was thinking. He explained that hearts and minds have an energy that he can feel in his heart even without being near the person. He can feel if it is a negative energy or a positive one. He continued by telling me that those who had bad thoughts often had bad actions and those who had good thoughts would in turn have good actions. Well that sounded complicated to me, but Santa has had a lot of practice at this, so I knew I couldn’t question his authority. I asked him what he would do if someone had both good and bad thoughts. Well, he said, that was the most common kind of person, but the really good boy or girl was the one who didn’t let bad thoughts become bad actions and replaced bad thoughts with good thoughts and followed through with good actions.
I asked Santa a question I’ve had since I was a child. How in the world did he get down chimneys, and what about the houses without chimneys? “Ho, ho, ho it is a shrinking app that I have on my phone”, he says. It used to be a big machine he had to carry along on the sleigh, but with the modern technology he could put the app on his phone and then scan himself and the toys to shrink to any size to fit any place he needed to go. This was barely believable, but he showed me the app and shrunk me down to show me that his fireplace mantle could feel like a street in New York City if you were small enough. He just makes sure to carry yarn to attach to the sleigh to get down and up the chimney.
How can reindeer fly? I inquired. Well, that was a bit more technical for Santa to explain. He said that he had to have each reindeer fitted with anti-gravity shoes, and the sleigh had helium baffled sides, as well as the lightest aluminum that he could get. There were some other technical terms that he used. Once they were up, up, and away, it was like gliding, he explained.
I really wanted to know about the elves and the workshops. How could all of these things be done every year in time for each child. “Well lets go see the workshop!” Santa says to me. Santa is very proud of his team. The elves all had their own tools and work station, though some worked together, all the elves had things that were special for them to work with. They sang and sang while working. One elf was wrapping gifts, she told me that she could pick all the wrapping paper designs and ribbons to her preference. She said Santa liked the elves to have work tools that made them happy, and she showed me her special scissors that were made of gold and her tape dispenser had glittering rhinestones all over it. She said that working for Santa was so fun that no one ever wanted to leave. Mrs. Clause kept bringing them treats and snacks and they stopped once every three hours for play time. She said that Elves consider the Clause’s like parents because the Elves were all orphans. She also told me that Elves don’t need sleep like people, so they just keep working because they love it. To my delight Santa made time to see each Elf and tell them how much he appreciated their work.
With only a couple more weeks till Christmas I was so happy that Santa had made time for me to visit. He and Mrs. Clause wished me well as I left with my belly full of treats and my eyes full of sugar plums. I made my way back home knowing that even in 2020 Santa is still thinking of the boys and girls in every town, even Roundup, Winnett, Melstone, and Lavina, just to name a few.
