BLM Plans Pile Burns in Petroleum and Phillips Counties

October 28, 2020

(LEWISTOWN, Mont.) – BLM’s Lewistown Field Office and Malta Field Office are planning the Petroleum County Roads pile burn and Camp Creek pile burn to reduce hazardous fuels by removing hand piles comprised of conifer trees, allowing an overall improvement of forest health.

The 183-acre Petroleum County Roads pile burn consists of juniper and ponderosa pine slash produced from projects implemented in the summer of 2019. The piles are located on both the 79 Trail Road and Dunn Ridge Road, approximately 23 miles NE of Winnet, MT. This burn project protects sagebrush vegetation but primarily removes ponderosa pine and Rocky Mountain Juniper along the identified corridors, while enhancing public and firefighter safety.

The Camp Creek hand piles were constructed by the Fort Belknap Tribe and BLM North Central Montana District during a conifer thinning project to reduce hazardous fuels. The piles are composed of ponderosa pine sitting on 41-acres of BLM administered land. The pile burn is located a quarter mile east of the Camp Creek Campground, roughly 1.5 miles NE of Zortman, MT.

Both burning operations will take place in the winter months when there is adequate snow or moisture. Active ignition should be completed in 2-5 days with the chance of residual smoke lingering in the area for up to a week.
