Dear Musselshell County partners,

I wanted to update you with the census results in Montana as well as Musselshell County. Short answer—it’s not going great.

For numbers specific to Musselshell County, the only information we have for certain is that the percentage of households that have been counted by the bureau is 66.66%. When you add in state-wide and regional estimates from the census bureau telling us how many households have been ‘enumerated’ (ie. Canvassed by a census bureau door knocker), our best guess is that there are ROUGHLY 431 households in Musselshell County that have not been counted.

Overall, Montana is about 91% enumerated (ie. counted), which means that state-wide about 48,000 households have not yet been counted. Montana’s count is the second worst in the country, second only to Alabama.

We are well on our way to a severe undercount. We have most likely already lost our shot at a second seat in Congress, and now we are on our way to undercount in many rural Montana communities, which would cause under-representation of rural counties in the legislature, and affect resources available to rural communities from the Federal Government.

If you all have any ideas for how we can be helpful to increase the count in Musselshell County, please be in touch. We only have 5 days to go until September 30 and we still have funds available for advertising, events, incentives, or anything else you can think of! Please feel free to contact Zach Brown/Director of Rural Census Organizing/Montana Nonprofit Association. His cell is 406.579.5697

Thank you for your time.
