Musselshell/GoldenValley Weed District, the Musselshell/Golden Valley 4-H Council and Jennifer Fosjord with MSU Extension held the first annual noxious weed pull on June 6th 2020 and it was a huge success! The 4-H members along with their parents learned about spotted knapweed and why it needs to be controlled. Teams of 2 were formed ending up with over 19 teams. The teams learned that spotted knapweed stops native plants from thieving, that one spotted knapweed plant can produce over 25,000 seeds in a season and just how fast spotted knapweed can take over. The teams learned the best way to pull spotted knapweed and why it is important to bag the plants and dispose of the plants properly. Teams then grabbed gloves and bags and proceeded up the hill behind the Fair Grandstands and the pulling began. After the morning was over, the 4-H kids had pulled over 70 bags of spotted knapweed and houndstongue. First place winners for most spotted knapweed pulled were Lukas and Ryan Olson receiving $20 each, 2nd place winners were Emalee Vickers and Taryn Brown receiving $10 each and third place winners were Madison and Graisen Jones receiving $5 each. After the weed pull was done' the whole group walked over to the new noxious weed boot brush station that the Weed District and the 4-H Council sponsored. The group learned why a boot brush station is needed in the River Walk way and how important not allowing the movement of noxious weed seeds into new areas is. The group was asked by the Weed District Coordinator to pass the word around about the new boot brush station and how important it is to our community. The boot brush station is located at the Roundup River Walk Heritage Trail parking area right next to the Kiosk. A huge thank you goes out to the Big Sky Watershed Corps crew and Jay and Barbie Pelan for helping the Weed District with the installation of the boot brush station. On a personal note it has been a dream of mine being the Weed Coordinator for Musselshell/Golden Valley for over 7 years to be able to have an event of this kind. I am so grateful to all of the kids, their parents, public members and participants for making this event not only a success, but helping our community become a nicer place to live and play. Thank you all so much and see you next year, Meriel Beck Weed Coordinator.
