Independence Day Fun Canceled?

Roundup has one of the best small-town 4th of July events and fireworks to be found. Everyone comes, some from miles around. There is a local pride and festive spirit. What a disappointment to read of this year’s lack of events. It is especially confusing that our small town is cancelling when we see the rest of the world protesting, rioting, and looting freely while disregarding social distancing. Even locally, we have had a Main Street cruise on Friday evenings without controversy. Most, if not all, local businesses are open and people are driving, shopping, and going about life. I spoke to Mayor Jones, and she informed me that the Health Department is required by law to follow the guideline that the Governor has set forth and can add more restrictions, but not less. Due to this, the city is legally bound to follow these guidelines even when it seems unreasonable to some. (To reassure the readers, none of the health departments have added more restrictions according to Mayor Jones.)

While it is understandable that R.I.D.E. and the city have to be subject to mandates made for them by the Central Montana Health District, I for one will be on Main Street on the 4th of July at 11AM, to watch the “Cruise Main Street” and I hope all of you will be there too. While it may be too difficult and costly for the city to “officially” do a parade by the CMHD standards set forth, we can assemble ourselves down the sidewalks, using social distancing to be respectful to others and in compliance.

For those who are still afraid or at risk of Covid-19, or do not feel well, please stay home and not expose yourself or others to risk. Let’s all have a joyful, safe, and peaceful Independence Day. No one is “required” to celebrate, which makes it the perfect example of how freedom works.

If your planning a family reunion or class reunion, the Mayor recommends that you call the health department for help in how to organize your event safely.
