Superintendent Arntzen Releases Additional ESSER Allocation Information

HELENA— Superintendent of Public Instruction Elsie Arntzen announced additional GUIDANCE to districts regarding Montana’s $41.3 million in Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) funds from the federal CARES Act today. Superintendent Arntzen also announced additional allocations that she will be making to support students.

“Every Montana community has felt the economic or health impacts of the COVID-19 outbreak,” Superintendent Arntzen said Thursday. “I am ensuring that Montana’s ESSER funds are distributed equitably to serve all Montana students and my office has worked to get these funds out to communities as quickly as possible. Montana’s local control will continue to guide the flexible use of these funds.”

All Montana public school districts are now eligible to access ESSER funds through the state’s E-Grants system. $37.8 million will flow directly to local school districts through their Title I formula which supports economically disadvantaged students. Most Montana school districts are eligible for Title I but Superintendent Arntzen previously announced that she will be ensuring that every Montana district receives at least $10,000. District allocations can be found HERE.

From the remaining $3.5 million, $3 million will go to serving special education students in all districts, including through district cooperatives that serve our most rural special education students. Of the remaining funds, $206,000 will be spent to improve Montana’s E-Grants system and $308,000 will remain for future COVID-19 related education support.

Districts have wide discretion over the use of ESSER funds as long as they are used to prevent, prepare for, or respond to the COVID-19 outbreak. Additional information can be found on the OPI’s COVID-19 webpage.
