Most people are already tired of hearing about the toilet paper shortage. Now it seems that even groceries are becoming a rare commodity. Our local stores have been a lifeline in our small community in times of hardship. Now is no exception...except...we now have shoppers from other communities pecking away at local supplies as well. It has become a "get it while you can" frenzy, and no one knows how long it may go on.

IGA and Van Dykes are both doing the best that they can to keep up with demand all with the uncertainty of future supply. Ed Rutan at Picchionis IGA said that potatoes have been going fast and that "truckers are still trucking and suppliers have been doing a really great job", but he also mentioned that some stores are not able to accept trucks that come from out of state. If we were to come under the same restrictions there would be much less merchandise to choose from.

Both stores are willing to do curbside orders for those who are elderly or sick. Van Dykes has asked that orders be placed with a minimum of two hours to fill before picking up. Van Dykes will also be suspending their usual weekly ads at this time to try to help keep some things on the shelf. Right now the two stores still have plenty for everyone with the exception of paper products. If shoppers keep others in mind and only buy what they need as they need it, there will be more for everyone.

As we face the future uncertainties, it makes us very aware of how much our local businesses are vital to our community. Our community has always been strong in the face of adversity and will prevail. This too shall pass.
