Understanding Terrorism

Most of us believe that because we live in Montana we will never be involved in a terrorist incident. Yet less than 25 years ago, a major domestic terrorist event occurred right here in Musselshell County. Four members of an anti-government group called the Montana Freemen, armed with semi-automatic handguns and assault style rifles, approached the court house in Roundup. Subsequently, there was an 81-day standoff near Jordan between the Freeman and the FBI which, fortunately, ended peacefully.

Also, from the 1970’s to the mid-1990’s, the “Unabomber” Ted Kaczynski, who lived outside of Lincoln, MT killed three people and injured 23 with letter bombs sent to executives whose corporations were, in his opinion, “eroding human freedom by their use of modern technology.”

So, even though we live in Montana, the chances of being involved in a domestic terrorist incident are higher than we might think.

In addition to domestic terrorism, stories about international terrorist events are common in the news. For example, Iranian terrorist leader Soleimani was recently assassinated in Iraq. More generally, we continually hear about the activities of Hezbollah, ISIS, Hamas, etc. and how they affect US policy and diplomacy.

In this seminar Tom will discuss domestic and international terrorism. He will help you understand the threat of terrorism, how it relates to you, relevant and current events involving terrorism, and the actions you can take to minimize your anxiety about school shootings and other terrorist events. Tom will also explain some of the ways in which the government protects us from terrorists without spying on us or taking away our freedoms.

Tom’s 31 years of military and law enforcement experience make him well qualified to discuss terrorism. Public and private organizations hire Tom to teach their employees how to handle critical incidents, including terrorism and active shooters, through instructional workshops on security and related topics.

Tom is a terrorism expert and a certified instructor for the Department of Homeland Security’s Office for Bombing Prevention. Additionally, he travels to the Middle East several times a year to advise on terrorism related issues.
