Letters to the Editor

I have been sprinkling Hollyhock seeds along pur walking trails in batr dots that the lawn mowers do not go. Hopefully, these will attract Butterflies,Hummingbirds and Bees next year. We need to get together a work team to clean up these trails as they have been neglected. Right now, they are a embarrassment and a mess ! We have very little in this town as entertainment so it would be worthwhile to care for what we have.

In the paper of 9/11/2019 there were a couple of great columns both with the gospel as the subject. The respectful stating of the viewpoints of both authors was greatly appreciated and I think the best place for discussions like this is a public forum like the paper because the gospel is not to be hidden under a bushel. I also liked these columns because they pointed toward a great debate going on within Christianity. The debate is that of following the rules versus licence under grace and if it just applied to Church-going Christians you might be justified in ignoring it. However the same argument in a more vicious form is being carried out in government, in the media, in corporations, seemingly in every aspect of american public life these days. The essence of the debate is that one side is saying that to build something of lasting value we must follow a set of time tested precepts and the other side is saying that in order to move forward we need to change the rules and keep changing them until we get something we like.

What I find facinating in all of this is the position Jesus takes. It is best illustrated in the story of the woman taken in adultery, John 8:1-11. Jesus is teaching in the temple when the religious leaders of the day bring in a woman caught in adultery. She has broken the rules, the penalty is stoning to death and the leaders are asking Jesus 'Which side are you on? The side of following the rules or the side of freewheeling grace?' Jesus starts writing something in the sand, stands up, says "He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her" and returns to writing in the sand. I've heard one interpretation that says Jesus was writing down all the sins of the leaders but we don't know because it was sand he was writing in. However it was accomplished, the leaders realize that they don't measure up to the standard and quit the stage leaving Jesus and the woman alone. He asks if anyone is condemning her to death now and she says 'No one'. Jesus then says 'Neither do I condemn you'. Total victory for the liberals right? If you break the rules you can come to Jesus and get off scot free. But then Jesus follows it up with "Go and sin no more". Wait! Jesus is saying: 1) Lady, you have sinned against the rules and 2) You got off this time but I may not be around to save you if you pull this stunt another time. Wow! Jesus is a conservative!

What I find facinating about Jesus' position in all these debates is that he can be on both sides of an issue at the same time and be right in both cases. The conservatives have had their sins wiped out because they were written in sand (or air) and the liberals have had their sins wiped out because their accusers are gone but everyone realizes that they have sinned and done stupid. No wonder Jesus gets to be King and Priest someday.

The Roundup Sportsman Association has made many improvements to the range, and some changes in operations. One such is that the meeting night has been moved to the first Tuesday of each month, unless circumstances such as holidays, should prevent it, in which case notifications will be made.

Another change is that due to improvements and operations, the membership elected to change the dues from $40.00 a year to a family membership at $50.00 per year. This also allows member to bring guests to use the ranges.

Some folks, who participated in the RIDE activities at the range saw some of the improvements that have been made. The most significant being the clubhouse. The pistol range went from two bays to four bays and now to six bays. Shotgun activities are going to be expanded with the acquisition of two semi-portable clay bird throwers to complement the one already in place. And enhancements have been made to the rifles range, as well as purchase and emplacement of archery target backstops and new 3-D targets. An electrically operated, key-card, gate system is in the planning.

All of these have a cost involved and while the club is fortunate in getting grants, membership fees are also a significant factor. But beside the costs, having active members who are willing to be involved in helping with various activities, such as the archery and trap shooting related events is especially important.

Anyone who may have an interest in the association, and/or a specific activity, is invited to attend the monthly meetings, and participate in the events.

The association hosts monthly handgun and carbine shooting event, and unless the weather holds out, the one coming on Saturday, the 28th may be the last one of the season. And, with rifle hunting season in view, a 'rifle sight in day' has been scheduled, that both members and non-members can take advantage of. A full calendar of events is available at the range gate and at the meetings.

Thank you,

Ed Raastad, member
