Dallying, Dust, Desperados, and Darn Good Rodeo Ingomar Ranch Rodeo 'Kicks it' Labor Day weekend!

September 11, 2019

It was a challenging weekend for the Ladies, the Youth and the Open teams at the 5th Annual Ingomar Ranch Rodeo as the stock, feeling pretty happy after getting fat and sassy on this year’s grass, the dust kicked up from the welcome breeze, and the challenge of roping, riding, milking, branding, sorting, doctoring and bucking (not only during the ranch bronc ride, but from some contestant horses as well) led to a heck of an event.

The contestants, the judges, the announcer, the volunteers and the crowd were ‘all in’ from the first notes of the Star Spangled Banner on Saturday that kicked off the Ladies and Youth events, to the final winning Ranch Bronc ride that closed out the Open event on Sunday. It was the Ingomar Ranch Rodeo, and it was fun.

“There is something wonderful about a Ranch Rodeo that almost defies description,” commented Ingomar Rodeo Club Secretary Alice Cameron, who was busy honchoing the rodeo office, taking names, transferring times, adding up points....you name it...for the weekend. “I think it is such a family event,” Alice added, “youngsters are out practicing their roping to become future ranch hands, folks from 6 to 60 (and more) are catching up and swapping stories, and the crowd gets a glimpse into what ranching life is all about.”

Folks were there from far away Minnesota to nearby Melstone and everywhere in between. And the crowd cheered – they cheered for a gal who agreed to enter the ranch bronc ride at the last minute for a team that was missing their bronc rider, they cheered for a fast time in the cow milking, they cheered each team as the Team performed their final event for this rodeo, and they cheered for all the Ingomar Rodeo sponsors. “Without all the sponsors we get, we couldn’t do this rodeo,” added Ingomar Rodeo Club president Howard Newman. “We are really grateful.”

The Ladies team winner was Res Basin – Gillian Severe, Rachel Mitchell, Cortney Phipps, Jessica Waddington; the Youth winning team was the Wild Bunch – Todd Dickson, Riley Buffington, Cole Rehm, Melanie Power; and the Open team winners, Lazy J3 Quarterhorses – Greg Severe, MacKabe Severe, Gillian Severe, Garrett Severe, Jay Phipps. They not only won Ingomar Rodeo Club Jackets and prize money, but also won the right to compete Sept 7th and 8th in the Eastern Montana Ranch Rodeo Finals in Terry MT, and in the Nile Ranch Rodeo Finals at the Metra in Billings MT October 12th. The Top Hand for Ladies went to Kari Phipps, for Youth, Kale Dutton, and for the Open, to Garrett Severe. Top horse honors went to Gillian Severe for Ladies, Cash Pierson for youth, and Greg Severe for the Open.

Announcer Andrew Johnson had lots of fun with the cowhands, as he knows most of them. At one point when a team was having a tough time getting a roped calf across the line to get branded, Johnson quipped, “By the way, it is a timed event you know.” As the dust settled, and the awards were presented, folks from the crowd had already begun to help out with the cleanup. “That’s Ingomar”, added Ingomar Rodeo Club Director Donald John Cameron, “It’s a special place.” Of course there is always the emptying of the His and Hers that follows all this.....and the Newman’s (Howard and Johnna) were up to the task.
